Right, you've given me an excuse to let it all out, Joe. I've always hated that expression. It's easy to compare apples to oranges! They're both fruit! Both roughly spherical! They both have a skin, a fleshy part, and seeds! They both contain sugars!
A better expression would be "comparing oranges and bricks". There is far less in common between an orange and a brick.
